Council strongly encourages responsible dog ownership.

This includes:

  • Registration
  • Wearing of collars and disks
  • Not allowing dogs to wander at large or be a nuisance (barking or otherwise)
  • Not allowing dogs to attack, chase or harass people or other animals
  • Picking up and properly disposing of their dogs’ 'droppings'


New laws for cat and dog owners came into effect on 1 July 2018

  • Mandatory microchipping of cats and dogs
  • De-sexing of dogs and cats born after the 1 July 2018
  • New rules for breeders who sell dogs and cats
  • Introduction of a State-wide database, called Dogs and Cats Online.

Dog Registration

To register your Dog please visit Dogs and Cats Online (DACO) at or call in and visit our customer service staff who can assist you. Dogs must be registered by 31 August each year.  Any dog unregistered from 1 September will be subject to a late payment fee in addition to the renewal fee applicable.  A $170 fine applies for keeping an unregistered dog. All dogs must be registered by the age of three months.

Dog Registration Fees 2019/2020

Standard Dog - $40.00 Non-Concession ($20.00 Concession) 

Non-Standard Dog - $80.00 Non-Concession ($40.00 Concession)

Veterinary certificates of de-sexing and evidence of microchipping will also be required in order to claim discount.


Concession card holders may be eligible for a 50% discount.  Evidence of concession cards must be provided to claim concessions.  These details will be verified upon entering them into Dogs and Cats online.

Replacement Registration Tags

If your dog’s registration tag is lost or damaged, you can purchase a replacement tag for $10.00.  Please visit Dogs and Cats Online (DACO) at or call in and visit our customer service staff who can assist you.


2019/2020 Registrations

Animal renewal notices for 2019/20 will be sent to pet owners in the first week of July. This year renewal notices will be sent for both dogs and cats but there is no fee applicable for cats.

If you are a pet owner and have selected SMS or email as your preferred method to receive your renewal notice, please keep an eye on your phone and emails.

Lifetime discs were issued to pets in July 2018 so no disc will be sent this year.

Animal Management Plan

Council’s Strategic Urban Animal Management Plan is designed for everyone within City of Prospect, both animal owners and non-owners.

The Plan’s mission is to build on the foundation established through the strategies currently used by Council and create an environment which encourages responsible pet ownership, and where people and pets integrate safely and harmoniously within our community.

Off leash exercise areas for your dog

All dogs in public places in City of Prospect must be held on a leash not more than two metres long.

City of Prospect has a dedicated fenced dog park located at Broadview Oval where dogs can be exercised and socialised in the safety of an enclosure.

In addition, there are also several parks dogs can be exercised off-leash within City of Prospect between certain times.

Off-leash areas are available between 5-8am and 5-9pm at the following locations:

  • Broadview Oval - 26 Collingrove Avenue, Broadview
  • Prospect Gardens/ Narnu Wirra Reserve (west side lawn area) - West Terrace, Nailsworth
  • Pash Reserve - 31-33 Derlanger Avenue, Collinswood
  • Percy Street Reserve - 65 Percy Street, Prospect
  • Memorial Gardens - 1 Menzies Crescent, Prospect
  • St Helens Park - 39 Prospect Road, Prospect
  • Prospect Estate - 286 Prospect Road, Prospect
  • Irish Harp Reserve - 350 Regency Road, Prospect
  • Cane Oval/Parndo Yerta - 104-120 Churchill Road, Prospect


Lost and found pets

If you have lost or found a pet, please contact us on 8269 5355.

For animals found, an Animal Management Officer will attend to collect the animal from you as soon as possible.  We will always aim to reunite the animal with its owner to avoid unnecessary stress for the dog and its family.

Dogs found wandering at large within City of Prospect which have been seized by an Animal Management Officer are taken to the:

The Animal Welfare League charges City of Prospect fees for the care, housing and feeding of dogs impounded at their facility.  These fees are charged to the dog owner or person collecting the dog and must be paid in full at Council’s Civic Centre before the dog can be released.

For lost animals we also recommend you contact:

  • Local veterinary clinics.
  • You may also consider placing notices on public notice boards or doing a letter box drop in your local area (please do not place signs on stobie poles).
  • You can also log into your DACO (Dogs and Cats on Line) Account and indicate your dog has been lost.


Keeping more than two Dogs
